The Hero of Plant-Based Jewish Cuisine

Gathering around the holiday table is one of the most important ways to connect to one another and to preserve traditions. But aside from booming laughter and the warmth of a meal shared, there’s another feeling we too often get after a holiday meal. That overstuffed feeling that often comes just after you finished dessert — and sometimes before.

What if you can have your cake and eat it too?

Kenden Alfond wondered the same thing after she moved to rural Cambodia. The only Jewish person for miles, Alfond found herself desperately Googling to find a holiday menu that inspired her and was healthy for her family.

All the recipes she found felt like something her Bubbe or Savta would serve, and were not reflective of Alfond’s or her daughter’s generation. Alfond wondered if poor health and weight gain was the “price to pay” for engagement in Jewish life.

Alfond never found the menu of her dreams—so she created her own instead.

Jewish Food Hero Cookbook: 50 Simple Plant-Based Recipes for Your Holiday Meals offers full menus for each of the 10 major Jewish holidays, so you can serve up healthy dishes without sacrificing flavor.

“Cooking healthy holiday meals can be a form of creative expression, self-care and love,” says Alfond, the founder of Jewish Food Hero.

“Though this is a cookbook, it’s not just about the food. It’s also about how you feel leading up to the holiday and the memories you’ll inspire for your family and your children for generations to come.”

The recipes are designed to work together, but you can also pick and choose your favorite appetizers, main dishes, sides and desserts. No one at your table will be able to resist second helpings of her Spiced Stuffed Apples or Citrus Carrot Salad, a lightly sweet and spiced salad is served on a bed of fresh greens.

Kenden’s artful pairing of traditional and modern food makes this cookbook full of welcome surprises. Your holiday table will unfold with the fresh flavors of vegetables, fruits, beans and whole grains (all kosher pareve).
