1⁄2 cup warm water
4 packages active dry yeast (or 3 tbl)
1 tbl sugar
7 large eggs
2 cups sugar
1 1⁄2cups oil
1 1⁄2 teaspoons salt
4 cups boiling water
5 lbs flour
1large egg, beaten lightly
sesame seeds, poppy seeds or just sugar
Preparation of Challah bread:
For the yeast: Place the 1/2 cup warm water, yeast, 1 tbl sugar in a bowl. Set aside until yeast rises for about 5-10 minutes.
In a separate bowl, combine the 2 cups sugar, water, salt, and oil.
Add the eggs and mix them. Add the mix of yeast. Mix throughly.
Add the flour about 16 cups.
Knead the dough until you get that tender texture.
Separate the piece of dough with the blessing. (Ba-ruch A-tah Ado-noi Elo-heinu Me-lech Haolam Asher kidshanu B’mitzvotav V’tzivanu L’hafrish Challah”
Divide dough into 6 pieces, and shape into challah according to your favorite style. For Rosh Hashanah make it round.
Let rise for 30 minutes.
Brush each loaf with beaten egg. Sprinkle with seeds or sugar.
Bake at 300 degrees for about 50 minutes.
